Wales is a country which is part of the United Kingdom. It is located to the west of England, and east of the Irish Sea and Atlantic Ocean. It has a rich history and two national emblems. This article will discuss the three reasons why one of Wales' National Emblem is Leeks.

A national emblem is something which symbolically represents a country. Mostly, national emblems come from nature like plants and animals. Wales has two national emblems. These are daffodil and leek.

If you are familiar with daffodil, then you won't be surprised why it will be chosen as a country's national symbol. It is a beautiful flowering plant unlike leeks.

There are three possible reasons why leeks have been chosen as the country's national emblem. One possible reason could be the historical battle in Heathfield in 633 AD. In this battle the Welsh fought against the Saxons. The king of Wales asked his soldiers to wear leeks on their keeps in order to help them distinguish friend from foe.

Another possible reason is a belief which is linked to the feast of St. David. It was believed that on this day, if a maiden goes to bed with a leek under her pillow, she would dream of her future husband.

The third reason has something to do with the Lenten season. Since the days of old, during this season Leeks has been an important part of the people's diet.

Whether it's because of a historical battle, widespread use during the Lenten season or the belief of its magical aid to see one's future husband, leeks continues to be the national symbol of Wales. Leaks are worn every first day of March to commemorate St. David and even during international rugby matches.
